Gratitude is the one word Donna uses to describe her life as an artist. Growing up in a famous art town, she was surrounded by very talented writers, photographers,
musicians and artists and took full advantage of the various art classes that were offered there. She went on to attended the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where she studied illustration and specialized in fashion, which in the 80s and 90s,was a booming business. It was well suited for print and was an exciting visual break from photography. She freelanced for Macy's,Mervyn's,Roxy,as well as independent clothing stores and clothing designers who liked her bold and colorful style. She also taught fashion illustration at West Valley College in Saratoga California for several years.
When computers came on the scene she was told she should go back to school as to not get left behind in the commercial art world. She couldn't imagine sitting in front of a computer screen and using a mouse instead of a paintbrush. She focused her attention on creating art that inspired her which included a wide variety of subject matter and mediums.
Then one day she started a granola company and built it up over a 11 year period. She sold it because she realized her heart was more in art and not manufacturing a cereal.
Donna moved from Oakland to Hood River in 2016 and says she is living in a beautiful fine art landscape painting. She took up encaustic painting which involves heating beeswax with damar varnish and pigment then applying it to wooden substrates then fused with a heat gun or butane torch. Encaustic opened up a very exciting and unpredictable way of creating art for Donna and she learned to let go of expectations and just be at one with the process which is blissful freedom.
